KC Mangalam was born in Kerala and lived and schooled at Koduvayur, in Palakkad District, Kerala, India. She married Chidambara Vadyar . They had seven children, 3 sons and 4 daughters. Later the family moved to Penang, Malaysia (then Malaya), working at the Chettiars Sivan Temple in Penang.
Chidambara Vadyar lived at 28 Green Road 3, in Penang until his death in the eighties. Mangalam continues to live there.
